چکیده
Cilia are widely employed by living systems to manipulate fluid flow in various functions, such as feeding, pumping, and locomotion. Mimicking the intricate ciliary asymmetry combination with collective metachronal beating may find wide application transport mixing microfluidic systems. Here, we numerically analyze of pneumatic artificial cilia. We specifically address three aspects motion: (i) pumping backflow region, (ii) cilia (iii) transport—mixing transition region. Our results show that antiplectic metachrony leads highest efficiency rate two distinct regions, i.e., below above surface, respectively. motion strongly enhances diffusivity when advection is dominant at high Péclet numbers, a factor 3 for symplectic 4 synchronous beating. In addition, an increase 1.5 decrease 2.5 compared pumping. To investigate higher metachrony, develop simple two-cilia model demonstrate shielding between neighboring main reason rate.

متن کاملEmergence of metachronal waves in cilia arrays.
Propulsion by cilia is a fascinating and universal mechanism in biological organisms to generate fluid motion on the cellular level. Cilia are hair-like organelles, which are found in many different tissues and many uni- and multicellular organisms. Assembled in large fields, cilia beat neither randomly nor completely synchronously--instead they display a striking self-organization in the form ...
متن کاملFluid transport at low Reynolds number with magnetically actuated artificial cilia.
By numerical modeling we investigate fluid transport in low-Reynolds-number flow achieved with a special elastic filament or artificIal cilium attached to a planar surface. The filament is made of superparamagnetic particles linked together by DNA double strands. An external magnetic field induces dipolar interactions between the beads of the filament which provides a convenient way of actuatin...

A generic nonlinear Maxwell model for the stress tensor in viscoelastic materials is studied under mixing scenarios in a three-dimensional steady lid-driven cavity flow. Resulting laminar and turbulent flow profiles are investigated to study their mixing efficiencies. Massless tracer particles and passive concentrations are included to show that the irregular spatio-temporal chaos, present in t...
متن کاملEffect of Cilia Orientation in Metachronal Transport of Microparticles
A biomimetic approach is used to generate a directed transversal transportation of micron-sized particles in liquids based on the principle of cilia-type arrays in coordinated motion. Rows of flaps mimicking planar cilia are positioned off-centre along an array of cavities covered with membranes that support the flaps. These membranes are deflected from a concave to a convex shape and vice vers...
